Condominiums are a bit like our townhouses and apartments here on the mainland. Single family homes - The Hawaiian islands are big, which means that while some parts of Hawaii may be so urban that a condominium is your only option there are still plenty of places where a single family home can be found. There are a few differences in single family homes as opposed to what is found on the mainland, primarily because homes in Hawaii don't have the strict European background that much of the mainland enjoys but are designed in a more Polynesian style.
